Display Screen Equipment (DSE) Assessments

Here is what the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) says:

"Computer workstations or equipment can be associated with neck, shoulder, back or arm pains, fatigue and eyestrain. These aches and pains are sometimes called upper limb disorders (ULDs) or repetitive strain injuries (RSI). These problems can be avoided by following good practice.
Display screen equipment (DSE) is any work equipment having a screen that displays information. Typical examples are computer screens often called monitors or VDUs. Surveys have found that high proportions of DSE workers report aches, pains or eye discomfort. Mostly, these conditions do not indicate any serious ill health, but it makes sense to avoid them as far as possible.
The Health and Safety (Display Screen Equipment) Regulations aim to protect the health of people who work with DSE. That does not mean that DSE work is risky - it isn't, if the user follows good practice like setting up their workstation well and taking breaks in intensive work. The Regulations were introduced because DSE has become one of the commonest kinds of work equipment. So, there is potential to make work more comfortable and productive for very large numbers of people by taking a few simple precautions."

Assessments are non-disruptive and are conducted at the individual's work station by one of our experts to assess the potential risks. As part of the assessments we will provide each user with guidance in achieving the optimum arrangement and posture, and help you the employer achieve compliance.

In most cases the optimum workstation set up can be achieved by adjustments to your existing equipment, which would incur no further charge. Where additional or replacement equipment is required, we will always recommended the most cost-efficient solution.

Standard DSE assessment (compliance check and set-up).

To assess the equipment for compliance and function and to make the recommended posture set-up of equipment that is available at the time of the assessment. The report will identify recommendations for any further required action. This assessment is designed to meet the requirements of the DSE regulations, to satisfy compliance and be carried out for users that are free from pain, discomfort, injury or conditions.

1x20 minute Workstation Assessment, carried out at the user's workstation and consisting of considerations for:

Working tasks and time spent with each
Equipment function and compliance
Set up of equipment to the recommended optimum settings for the individual

The service includes a detailed report with the assessment's findings and details of any further recommended action that may be identified, including a description of any adjustments that could not be completed during the assessment. The report will also include details of any additional equipment to enable the employer to source a design of product with the critical features for helping with the user's conditions. We do not supply products and have no commercial interest in any product suppliers. This ensures that we would only recommend the most cost-effective additional or replacement equipment which is critical for the individual’s condition. The user’s information is treated in strict confidence, according to our GDPR-compliant Privacy Policy.

The user's pain/discomfort conditions (based on a brief interview of the user at their workstation, or a different near-by location if more privacy is required)

Set up of equipment in the way that will help to manage, and avoid the aggravation of, the user's conditions (present equipment and time permitting)

Working from Home?

Does your current 'workstation' look anything like these and is it not exactly ideal? Is it causing you pain and discomfort? With a remote assessment we can advise you on some simple changes to improve your comfort and prevent the development or aggravation of injuries.

Many of us are working from home instead of our offices, for all or part of the week on a Hydbrid basis. Even so, Health and Safety law, including The Health and Safety (Display Screen Equipment) Regulations 1992 (as amended in 2002), do apply for employees working from home. Also, injuries can develop even within the short time periods involved.

How can we help? We offer remote DSE assessments conducted via video calling on various platforms to suit your preferences. The assessments take 60 minutes and start with a discussion on any concerns you may have with pain or discomfort. With your assistance, using your device's camera, we will view and check your set-up and equipment so we can advise on improvements. Following the assessment, we will issue a report with the findings and any further action we feel will help you to manage any concerns.

We also offer specific remote DSE assessments for pregnant workers and for those with particular needs, such as injury and health conditions.
